Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles Inglewood
About this place
Roscoe's House of Chicken 'N Waffles was founded in 1975 by Herb Hudson, a Harlem native, and the original location in Long Beach, California, is still open. The Inglewood restaurant at 621 W Manchester Boulevard carries the same idea: fried chicken and waffles on one plate, which the Los Angeles Times once described as so established an LA institution that people no longer question the combination.
How Roscoe's became famous
Soon after it opened, Hudson's friends in Motown and television, including Natalie Cole, told other celebrities about the restaurant, and comedian Redd Foxx mentioned it to his audience. That word of mouth turned a soul food restaurant into one of the best-known names in the genre.
The signature plate
The restaurant is best known for chicken and waffles, served together or separately. The menu includes the classic Leg or Thigh and Waffle, Roscoe's Original Waffle Tenders and Obama's Special, named for a presidential visit. More than a dozen sides are available, among them candy yams, biscuits, red beans, grits, coleslaw, cornbread, greens and mac and cheese.
Planning your visit
The Inglewood location has been listed as open Monday through Saturday from 8 AM to 10 PM, so check with the restaurant about Sundays and holidays. Expect a line on weekend mornings, and consider arriving off-peak.
